New Release Shelf

What is on the New Release Shelf? Under Orders by Dick Francis is a fine mystery by an author who is a master at his craft. Mr. Francis’ mysteries always involve the British Horse Racing scene and his details are fascinating. His mysteries are always satisfying because you never really figure out the crime until the end.

Come in and check out the new release shelf. New arrivals come in daily.

Check out our photos at Flickr

In honor of National Library Week, the LCL is participating in a statewide photo contest. Check out our new pictures at Flickr - it's the third link down on the left. Make sure you enter your comments - we would love to hear what you think.

The Library 1.0 set is our interpretation of libraries of the past. The Library 2.0 set is the real deal, here, everyday at LCL. Tell us what you think.

All we can tell you is that we had a lot of fun doing this.

Great big thank you to Mr. Zack Medlin - our favorite volunteer - our best buddy - and a real Southern Gentleman.

Thanks Zack!

Jimmy Wales

Went to the Jimmy Wales presentation last night in Spartanburg. The presentation was a joint effort of the Friends of the Spartanburg Library and Converse College. We joined a party from The South Carolina State Library and car pooled to Converse.

Mr. Wales is the founder of Wikipedia, the popular open source encyclopedia. His overall theme was "Free Knowledge for Free Minds". What a great theme for ANY library. He expounded on his vision of the future and also highlighted some of his new projects.

Thanks to the State Library for letting us ride up. Had a great time!

A Big Big Thanks!

The Library Staff and Board of Directors would like to offer a big THANK YOU to the Kiwanis Club and Ruby Gibbs for a cash donation that they made for the purchase of Children’s books. Through their generosity we were able to purchase the following titles: “Champions on the Bench”, “Charming Opal”, “Batter up Wombat”, “Someday”, “An Apple for Harriet Tubman”, “A Second is a Hiccup”, “Priscilla Superstar!”, and “Let them Play”. Thank you very much for your thoughtfulness, it is greatly appreciated.

The Annual Easter Egg Hunt was a huge success. Thanks to all the patrons and pre-schoolers who participated.

New Release Alert!!

On the “New Release Shelf”: “A Long Way Gone, Memoirs of a Boy Soldier” by Ishmael Beah. This book is a gripping account of a young man who was forced to become a boy soldier in Sierra Leone at the age of twelve. At 16 he was removed from fighting by UNICEF. Through the help of rehabilitation he has learned to forgive himself, recover his humanity and, finally, heal. This is an extraordinary and mesmerizing account told with uncommon honesty and humanity. If you were moved by Elie Wiesel’s “Night”, you will enjoy this book.
